The Effects of Setting

"As I looked about me I felt that the grass was the country, as the water is the sea. The red of the grass made all the great prairie the colour of wine-stains, or of certain seaweeds when they are first washed up. And there was so much motion in it; the whole country seemed, somehow, to be running."

"The grave, with its tall red grass that was never mowed, was like a little island."

"Winter comes down savagely over a little town on the prairie.  The wind that sweeps in from the open country strips away all the leafy screens that hide one yard from another in summer, and the houses seem to draw closer together.  The roofs, that looked so far away across the green treetops, now stare you in the face, and they are so much uglier than when their angles were softened by vines and shrubs.

The effect that the setting has on Antonia is that it depresses her. The setting depresses her. It reminds her of when her father died. The setting upsets her, changing the way she sees everything around her.

My bedroom might be the only place I can go when I am having a bad day. It is my home it gives me a sense of security. A place of comfort

Argument: Abortion

My Claim:       Abortion Should be Illegal (USE REPREHENSIBLE!!!!! meaning highly unacceptable and deserving censure)

  • Evidence: Abortion is a form of murder and demeans the value of human life.
    • Commentary 1       Abortion kills the baby. After conception there is a REAL(!) living human being waiting to come out into the world. When a pregnant woman feels her baby kick she says the baby kicked. Not the fetus kicked or the beginning of a life form kicked but the baby kicked. The baby has already begun living a life and if that life is taken away from him/her before birth then that life will very short as to what it could be.
    • Commentary 2       I would like to know the difference between killing a baby before its born and after its already in the crib. Either way the baby is completely and totally defenceless. A baby normally is defenceless, unable to fend for itself

After I get to school,
Before the bell rings,
While I do last minute homework,
As I talk to my buddies,
I begin my long day of school.

As soon as the bell rings,
Before I am late to class,
Since I am quite late often,
Even though I rush,
I head to class.

Copper Sun

Often we don't consider the lives of the black slaves before the civil war.Sharon M. Draper's Copper Sun showed me what it was like to be a slave before The American Civil War.

The main characters are Amari and Polly. The story tells about how the two girls escape from their master and develop an unlikely friendship.

The setting: The book takes place in the South East sometime before The American Civil War.

I can compare the book to past events. It takes place in the time right before the civil war. And I can also compare the book to Red Badge of Cougar because it takes place in the same time.

War Is...

War is needed, protecting our rights.
War is awful, ending others lives.
War is recommended, changing what needs to be changed.
War is wanted, dictating the lives of others.
War is sad, killing our friends and family.
War is malevolent, taking away our rights.
War is hope filled, wanting what it can't always have.
War is sacrifice, giving up our lives.
War is change, distroying our ideas of right and wrong.
War is war, ending never.
